Rainy season has begun in Izu, and the students of Yumegaoka High School are feeling listless from the weather. Mato Katori sees Futaba Ooki pass by her in the halls and Mato compliments how much the school's summer uniform suits her, but Futaba doesn't seem to notice and wanders away aimlessly. She is followed by Ai Ninomiya who is furious that the wet and humid weather is playing havoc with her hair, and has had to pin it down with many more hairpins than usual. Mato begins teaching her class, and notes that all her students, even the usually cheerful ones, are more distracted than usual. She surmises that the rainy season is particularly melancholic.
Later, Mato leaves her class and passes Makoto Ninomiya in the hallway, whose hair is pinned down by hundreds of hairpins. Mato asks him why, and he first blames the rain, but ultimately blames his sister Ai. Mato gets ready to leave the school for home, and walks to her car with her umbrella. Before getting in, however, she notices Hikari Kohinata going home in the wrong direction and decides to follow her.
Mato follows Hikari to the train station and gets onto the train, but is quickly spotted by Hikari. Hikari tells her that something great is about to appear, and moves Mato to a position by the train windows. From there, the two can see a huge display of blooming hydrangeas as they pass by - the view only lasts for a couple of seconds, but it's so beautiful that both Hikari and Mato are moved. Mato questions why Hikari would come all this way for something that is gone in seconds, and Hikari explains that she'll go to any lengths to do things that she enjoys. Hikari and Mato both decide to get off at the next stop and ride the next train back so they can see the hydrangeas again.
