Autumn has come to Izu, and the temperature is turning cold. Both Kokoro Misaki and Hikari Kohinata are walking on opposite sides of Izu's popular cherry blossom path - Kokoro is missing the warm summer weather and dislikes the cold, whereas Hikari who is sensitive to heat is enjoying the refreshing coolness. The pair spot each other across the street, and Hikari rushes over to talk to Kokoro.
While they chat, a cold wind blows down the street, and Kokoro starts to shiver. Hikari notices that Kokoro looks cold, and links arms with them to help warm them up. Hikari encourages Kokoro to look up at the red autumn leaves instead of down at the ground. Kokoro confesses that earlier that day someone at school had written "octopus mouth" on their notebook and that they've been upset ever since. Kokoro tells Hikari that when they find out who did it he plans to "kick his ass", but Hikari muses that even if he did kick his ass, he would regret it afterwards because even if you find out who did something to hurt you, it doesn't make you feel any better.
Another strong gust of wind blows down the path, whipping up thousands of leaves like confetti. Both Kokoro and Hikari are shocked by how beautiful it is, saying "it's beautiful!" simultaneously. After spending some time silently marvelling at the falling leaves, Hikari wonders out loud that it's mysterious how they felt that the scenery was beautiful at the same time, that nobody can explain the shared experience and connection that happens between two people. Kokoro smiles, and they continue down the path, hand in hand.
