Late at night, Futaba Ooki and Hikari Kohinata are watching a scary tv show at Kino Kohinata's beach cafe Amanchu-ya. Before they know it it has become completely dark outside, and the girls plan to go home. As the two girls walk together towards the bus stop, and Futaba muses if the jet black darkness is an entrance to another world,
but the two joke that it's just Futaba being influenced by the scary show they were just watching. They reach the bus stop and part ways, with Futaba going off on her bike and Hikari waiting for the bus to arrive. Now alone, Hikari really takes in how dark it is, the only illumination coming from a single streetlight above her. She wonders if illuminated places are an enclosed space isolated from the rest of the jet black world, which would make an interior-lit bus a small mobile room.
The bus arrives and Hikari hops on, initially believing she's alone, but then noticing a man standing with her back to her at the very back of the bus. She gets a message from Futaba and reassures her that she got onto the bus ok, but when she looks up again, she notices the man has moved closer to her since the last time she looked up, his back still to her. She looks away again, and again, the man moves closer. She looks away again, and he's now about a foot away from her. She starts to panic, and tries not to look, but suddenly he's right in front of her. She covers her eyes, but the man leans right over into her face and breathes heavily. Without looking up, Hikari tries to reason with him that there are plenty of other seats, and she's happy to move if he wants her seat since she's sitting in the priority seating.
The tannoy announces that the next stop is "the Town of Light" and Hikari looks up, but the man is nowhere to be seen. She decides she's getting off the bus at the next stop. As she steps off and wonders to herself what just happened, the man appears in the bus doorway behind her and asks "Are you leaving already? Well. That's too bad." the bus door closes and the bus leaves, with the man watching her through the window. Hikari gets another message from Futaba on her phone and it initially makes her jump, but she quickly calls Futaba to tell her what just happened.
