Closing Ceremony (終業式 Shūgyō-shiki) is the twenty-first chapter of the Kozue Amano manga Amanchu!.
It was originally published in Monthly Comic Blade on August 30th, 2010, and was later republished in Amanchu! Volume 4 on March 10th, 2012. In the original Monthly Comic Blade serialization, Chapter 21 was released as Chapter 20, but the chapter order was altered for the volume releases.
Summary[]
On the final day of the semester at Yumegaoka High School, Futaba Ooki, Hikari Kohinata and the rest of their classmates are suffering in the extreme heat of the summer during their final class. Their chairs are too hot to sit on, the students fan themselves under the tables, and the only thing that brings them respite is the occasional gust of wind coming in through the window. The students are near universally excited for the summer vacation, with some even already packing their school bags in anticipation to leave; the only things standing between them and the vacation are this class and the school's closing ceremony. Their teacher Mato Katori hands the students their end of semester report cards. Futaba's scores are below average apart from in Japanese, P.E., and Art. By comparison, Hikari has scored highly in nearly every subject except Japanese.
Futaba muses to herself that she feels uneasy about the summer vacation ahead of her, because she won't be seeing her friends at school every day. The idle days make her feel like she's being left behind by the world and that makes her feel like her existence has no meaning. Interrupting her thoughts, Mato wishes her class goodbye and the students all head home for their summer vacation. Futaba and Hikari walk home together, and Futaba wonders out-loud if her friends will also be lonely during their vacations. Hikari doesn't understand because she doesn't have the context of Futaba's previous thoughts. Futaba apologises for being a pessimistic thinker, and explains that she hoped that she could become a positive thinker
after meeting Hikari but it hasn't worked out that way. She tells Hikari that the fact she has no plans for the summer makes her feel uneasy, but Hikari counter that it's actually a good thing, because that means the summer in front of them in a blank canvas to sketch her own memories onto. Thinking about it for a while, Futaba finally smiles, realising she's starting to look forward to her vacation after-all.
