Although this is a small step for mankind, it is a giant leap for me.

Futaba Ooki

Roadside Station (道の駅 Michi no Eki) is the seventh chapter of the Kozue Amano manga Amanchu!.

It was originally published in Monthly Comic Blade on May 30th, 2009 and later republished in Amanchu! Volume 2 on February 10th, 2010.

SummaryEdit

Amanchu (manga) - Chapter 07 - 01
Futaba Ooki rides her moped down the highway to meet up with Hikari Kohinata and Mato Katori to celebrate them joining the diving club. While driving, Futaba notices how beautiful the scenery is, and wonders to herself if the sea that Neil Armstrong saw when he landed on the moon looked as beautiful as the sea she sees. While distracted by her thoughts, she doesn't notice the window in the passing car rolling it's window down, revealing Mato driving, and Hikari in the passenger seat, who shouts Futaba's name excitedly.

Amanchu (manga) - Chapter 07 - 02
The group meets up at Roadside Station in Ito Marine Town. Because it's the weekend, the place is full of tourists, so Mato tells the girls to wait for her in the courtyard while she goes to buy them something. While they sit on the steps and wait, Hikari tells Futaba that her joining the diving club makes her overjoyed - Futaba replies that it might be the first time that she had started doing something out of her own initiative, and it's all because of Hikari, so she thanks her. This makes Hikari embarassed and she blushes while blustering that she had only invited her to come along with her.

Amanchu (manga) - Chapter 07 - 03
Futaba explains that until now, whenever she wanted to do something, she was never able to take the first steps - she would overthink and never be able to follow anything through. She wonders why she was able to follow through this time - then remembers her meeting with Kino Kohinata who taught her to appreciate the vastness of the ocean.

Mato returns with a box of custard cookies for her and the girls, just in time to see Hikari run off, embarrassed. Mato tells Futaba that it's great that Futaba is finding herself able to do things for the first time - because if she doesn't do anything, nothing will change, but if she takes that first step she'll always be bound to find something new.

Amanchu (manga) - Chapter 07 - 04
Pikari runs back to Mato and Futaba, excitedly exclaiming that she's found something good. She shows them the monument "love and praise", where it's customary to write your wish on a ribbon, pray in front of the monument, and tie on your ribbon, leaving the fate of your wish to the winds of chance. Futaba notes to herself that this is the first time she's ever wished on a fortune ribbon before and, recalling her previous thoughts about the moon landing, thinks that "although this is a small step for mankind, it is one giant leap for me"[1]
