Amanchu! (あまんちゅ!) is a Japanese anime television series adapted from the slice of life manga series Amanchu! by Kozue Amano. The series focuses on two girls who join their high school diving club.

The series contains 12 episodes, and was produced by directors Junichi Sato and Kenichi Kasai of anime studio J.C.Staff. It was originally broadcast from July 8th and September 23rd, 2016. The series is simulcast in English by Crunchyroll. An OVA episode called The Story of the Promised Summer and New Memories was included in the Japanese release of the 7th Blu-Ray volume.

The series was renewed for a second season titled Amanchu! ~Advance~, which began airing in the Spring 2018 anime season on April 7th, 2018.

SummaryEdit

It is spring, the season of great changes. Hikari Kohinata is an overwhelmingly cheerful and outgoing 15-year-old girl who has spent all her life in a small and beautiful seaside town on the Izu peninsula. On the first day of high school, she meets Futaba Ooki, an introverted girl who has just moved from Tokyo. Before she knows it, Futaba gets dragged along into Hikari's passion for scuba diving. And from there, Futaba gradually starts to come out of her shell, and learns how to take challenges and dive into the ocean of life.

A positive and energetic girl who is passionate about scuba diving and joins the Diving Club when she enters high school. She makes fast friends with Futaba Ooki Hikari's nickname is "Pikari" (ピカリ), meaning "bright" or "shining".

Futaka "Teko" Ooki (大木 双葉 Ōki Futaba) CV: Ai Kayano
A girl who has recently moved to the coast from Tokyo, leaving her old life behind. She has low confidence and is very interverted which causes her to have trouble making friends. She joins the Diving Club after becoming best friends with Hikari, who gives her the nickname "Teko" (てこ) because Hikari thinks her eyebrows resemble Japanese dakuten diacritics.

Ai "Ane-chan" Ninomiya (二宮 愛 Ninomiya Ai) CV: Saori Ōnishi
Hikari and Futaba's upperclassman, senior member of the Diving Club, and twin sister of Makoto Ninomiya. She is quick to anger and very impulsive, especially in regards to her brother, who she is violent towards. Her nickname is "Ane-chan" (姉ちゃん), meaning "older sister".

Makoto "Otōto-kun" Ninomiya (二宮 誠 Ninomiya Makoto) CV: Yūichirō Umehara
Hikari and Futaba's upperclassman, senior member of the Diving Club, and twin brother of Ai Ninomiya. He is much calmer than his sister and is easily influenced by her, nearly always letting her get her own way. His nickname is "Otōto-kun" (弟くん), meaning "younger brother".

Mato Katori (火鳥 真斗 Katori Mato) CV: Shizuka Itō
Hikari and Futaba's homeroom teacher and the advisor of the Diving Club who cares deeply about her students. Although strict, she is also quite playful and tries her hardest to make sure her students are always discovering new things about themselves.

Hikari's grandmother, a former diver and the owner of the scuba diving rental shop where the students dive together. She serves very popular homecooked meals to renters of her gear.

A cat who lives on the school grounds and hangs around the Diving Club's room. He is named "Cha" by Hikari because it's the only sound he makes. He follows the Diving Club members on most of their activities, even outside of school grounds. He is owned by the school's principal.

A small kitten that is rescued by a group of crows by Hikari and Futaba. She is adopted by the school principal to give Aria/Cha a friend, and the two become inseparable.

Sensing Futaba is depressed about giving up her old life, Hikari takes Futaba on a walk to see the cherry blossoms in bloom. Hikari and Futaba join the Diving Club, where they learn their teacher Mato will be their club advisor, and Futaba learns about air pressure and ear equalization.

Futaba observes a scuba diving class held by Hikari's grandmother, Kino. The next day, Futaba has her first experience diving in the school's pool, struggling to keep water out of her eye mask and losing confidence. However, with Hikari's guiding her as her buddy, she begins to get used to being underwater, managing to go to the deepest parts of the pool.
05 The Story of the First Time at Sea With Friends

Noticing Futaba struggling with strength, Mato has her and Hikari go jogging to build up strength. Along the way, they come across some students from diving school, Ai and Makoto Ninomiya, who turn out to be their upperclassmen in the Diving Club. After a hectic first meeting, Ai holds a meeting to discuss how Futaba will be aiming for an Open Water Diver Certification, which somehow ends in a chalk drawing session.
06 The Story of the False Wish
Honto janai Negai no Koto (ホントじゃない願いのコト)
August 12th, 2016
Futaba undergoes a pool course at the indoor pool, managing to properly learn how to clear her mask. However, it soon becomes apparent that Futaba doesn't actually know how to swim. Following the lesson, Mato takes Futaba and Hikari on a drive, where Futaba thanks Hikari for helping her find her own wish.
07 The Story of the End of Rain
Ame no Owari no Koto (雨のおわりのコト)

On a rainy day, Mato decides to follow Hikari as she boards a train, discovering that her only reason for doing so was to witness some blooming hydrangeas for a brief instant. Later, on a particularly hot day, Mato has the club play red light green light (in Japanese Daruma-san ga koronda (だるまさんがころんだ, lit. "The Daruma Fell Over")) as punishment for skipping on their exam studies.

Makoto becomes concerned when Ai receives what appears to be a love letter from her classmate, only to later find it was addressed to another girl. Later, as Futaba and Hikari take part in various fitness exams, Hikari helps Futaba improve her self-confidence during the 1000m run.
09 The Story of the Memories You Can't Erase

Futaba, who always takes photos to remember each moment, becomes shocked when her phone's memory has become full, requiring her to delete or move her old photos, including those of her friends from Tokyo. As Futaba finds herself unable to delete any of her old photos to make room for new memories, Hikari and the others buy her a digital photo frame to store all of her photos, both old and new.
10 The Story of Losing Your Way in Today

Futaba and Hikari invite Ai to hang out with them as they go shopping for logbooks and swimsuits. Afterwards, the girls go to the beach, where Futaba tells Kino about all the things she has learned since meeting Hikari. Futaba expresses her concerns about whether she can become a suitable buddy for Hikari, though Hikari expresses that she's had times when she lost her way as well, saying that it is a chance to have more fun. Afterwards, Futaba finally manages to pass the pool course, allowing her to move on to the Open Diver course with everyone.
11 The Story of the Cat and the Kitten
Neko to Koneko no Koto (猫と子猫のコト)
September 16th, 2016
Futaba and Hikari follow the club's mascot, Cha, leading them to take a path that neither of them has been down before. Along the way, they come across a small kitten that appears to have been separated from her mother. With neither girl able to take the kitten in, they decide to ask around at school for a potential owner, eventually getting found by Mato, who reminds them of responsibility involved in taking care of a life. Hearing Futaba wants to help the kitten like she helped her, Hikari convinces her mother to let the kitten stay at her house until they can find an owner. Just then, the school's principal, who is Cha's owner, decides to take in the kitten, who is given the name Ohime.
12 The Story of the Blue World
Aoi Sekai no Koto (青い世界のコト)
September 23rd, 2016
The Open Diver course begins, with Futaba and Hikari paired up as buddies. Futaba loses one of her fins on the way to the descent point, but it gets picked up by another diver, turning her fears of the unknown world beneath her into excitement. Guided by the bubbles of the other divers, Futaba reaches the bottom of the ocean floor, wowed by the scenery and sealife spread out before her. Clearing all the tasks before her, Futaba passes the course with flying colors and becomes a fully-fledged Open Diver. Afterwards, Futaba and Hikari thank each other for everything that's happened since they became friends.

In Japan, physical copies of the series have been released on Blu-Ray over 7 volumes. Each comes in a collectible box featuring exclusive illustrations by Kozue Amano. Each volume contains two episodes, with the exception of Volume 7 which included Episode 12 plus un-aired OVA episode The Story of the Promised Summer and New Memories.

InternationalEdit

On May 26th, 2018 it was announced that UK company All The Anime have obtained the license to release a limited edition Blu-Ray edition of season one in Japanese with English subtitles, becoming the first English language release of the series in any territory. The release is planned for late 2018.[1]

The series is officially licensed for online streaming by Crunchyroll, who simulcast the series as it aired in Japan from July 8th, 2016[2] with subtitles in English, Spanish, and Brazilian Portuguese.

SoundtrackEdit

Amanchu!'s opening theme is Million Clouds performed by Maaya Sakamoto. The series' ending theme is Futari Shōjo (ふたり少女 lit. Two Girls) performed by Hikari and Futaba's voice actresses Eri Suzuki and Ai Kayano under the band name "TekoPikari"
